Moon phases of 2016

NASA’s scientific visualisation studio recently released a video showing moon phases for every day of 2016.

There are two different videos, one for the Northern hemisphere and one for the Southern. According to which place in the world you are coming from, you will see how the moon will appear to you on a specific day and hour.

The video shows how much of the moon is illuminated from the viewer’s perspective. The different phases are caused by the changing angle of the sun as the moon orbits around the Earth.

The full cycle lasts 29 and half days.

This website also allows you to check how you might see the moon on a special day, just by selecting the date and hour, and provides a full explanation of how the video was prepared.
